About The Club

The St. George District Hockey Club was founded by Syd Packham. It first began as Illawarra Men's Hockey Club in 1927 but then renamed to the St. George District Hockey Club in 1928. It was then the famous Red V shirt was born, which is now used by other sporting clubs. Our rich history includes thirteen top grade premierships, with five consecutive premierships from 1969. The club's last top-grade premiership victory being in 1988.

Some historic highlights of the club are:

1927 saw the club's first annual ball was held in the Castle Palais Ballroom at Rockdale.

In 1931 the club's first Australian representative players were Reg and Bill McNeil.

1944 St George Hockey Club won their first top grade premiership.

The club has had over twelve Australian representative players, including dual Australian representative Brian Booth and 1976 Olympians Ron Riley and Bob Proctor. Brian Booth and Keith Leeson were the only Sydney players selected in the first Australian Olympic Team. Brothers Kevin and Ivan Spedding were picked in the 1958 Australian team

The club's home grounds in the St. George area have included Wolli Park, Tempe, Kyeemagh, Hurstville Oval and Gardiners Park from 1940. With the backing of the Arncliffe Scots Sports and Social Club in 1996, the St. George District Hockey Club was renamed to the Arncliffe Scots St. George Hockey Club.

In January 2004, after many months of hard work, our new water-based synthetic field was completed at Kyeemagh. Along with the location of the field and licensed RSL club, the field is one of the best hockey complexes in Sydney – subsequently the RSL was forced to close 2018.

2005 St George hockey club merged with Randwick Hockey Club = St George Randwick Hockey Club.

2018 saw the celebration of St George & Randwick’s 90th anniversaries.

2020 the amalgamation of Easts & St George elite men's players saw the birth of South East Sydney Hockey (SESH) teams housing 3 teams in the Premiere League Hockey Competition.

In January 2021 our club underwent a renovation to give it a lift inside and out. This included a new coat of paint throughout the entire club, extension and up grade of the existing canteen, extension of the out door pergola over the BBQ, resufacing old worn out concrete with new cement surfaces. The old worn out synthetic field which was installed in 2004 was replaced with a new state of the art synthetic water based turf. This turf was also installed in the dugouts and around the grounds.

2022 the club purchased a new state of the art scoreboard and installed new water canons.

2023 the club installed LED field lights. 2023 saw the birth of 2 men's masters teams known as  SGR1 and SGR2

To this day, the club is known as the St George Randwick Hockey Club.
